The American Psychological Association released a

Statement on Homosexuality in 1994. According to this

Statement:

"The research on homosexuality is very clear.

Homosexuality is neither mental illness nor moral

depravity. It is simply the way a minority of our population

expresses human love and sexuality. Study after study

documents the mental health of gay men and lesbians.

Studies of judgment, stability, reliability, and social and

vocational adaptiveness all show that gay men and

lesbians function every bit as well as heterosexuals.

"Nor is homosexuality a matter of individual choice.

Research suggests that the homosexual orientation is in

place very early in the life cycle, possibly even before

birth. It is found in about ten percent of the population,

a figure which is surprisingly constant across cultures,

irrespective of the different moral values and standards

of a particular culture. Contrary to what some imply, the

incidence of homosexuality in a population does not

appear to change with new moral codes or social mores.

Research findings suggest that efforts to repair

homosexuals are nothing more than social prejudice

garbed in psychological accouterments."

About Gay Dads Canada (Pickering)

GDCP Support Group Meetings

For interested fathers who are gay, bisexual, questioning, or unsure what to make of these feelings inside, meetings are currently held the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month from 7:30 to 9:00 pm excluding holiday weeks.

These confidential meetings are low-key. We listen, and share of our experiences without giving advice, to provide understanding and encouragement for each father's journey.  Examples may include:

(1) coming out as a father and husband who now recognizes their true self;

(2) identifying and understanding this different dimension of yourself;

(3) connecting with others in the community who share your circumstances, fears and hopes;

(4) how to support your children; the unique needs of ourselves and our families.

Until the Gay Dads Canada (Pickering) support group is sufficiently well enough established and organized such that it can offer support services locally within the Pickering community and for those looking to join a support group immediately we would recommend consideration be given to attending meetings for gay fathers in Toronto at:

YMCA

42 CHARLES STREET EAST

TORONTO, ONTARIO
