NOTE: This directory exists so that gay fathers can find one another, not so that they can be solicited with commercial e-mail, nor, for that matter, so that they can be subjected to academic "surveys" by well-intentioned individuals interested in gay fathers' life experiences. Considering that putting together an online community is vitally important to a gay fathers coming out process, it seemed to GDC that the next logical step was this Directory to help pave the way for other gay fathers in doing the same thing. Since the page was mounted it has grown quickly, so that now there are more than 325 gay fathers, gay stepfathers, and gay father wannabe's included in the directory. In addition to listing names, GDC has included each person's (or couple's, in a few cases) preferred e-mail address, location (if GDC knows it), and webpage address (if applicable). One thing that soon became obvious to GDC was that as this page developed it WAS NOT just for gay fathers who happen to have been married. GDC discovered that some gay fathers who have never been married assumed you had to have been married to be supported by GDC. Not So! More and more gay fathers are coming to their parenting responsibilities through adoption, foster placement, surrogacy or some other arrangement, not to mention all the wonderful gay stepfathers. Even though there are some very significant differences in terms of their life experiences, what all gay fathers have in common--the fact that they are gay men parenting children in an often hostile, heterosexist society--is more important than those differences. This directory is NOT the same thing as the separately maintained Father’s Voice Newsletter mailing list described in the Newsletter. Being included on this web page means you are OUT! Hence, GDC insistence on full names. Unlike the Newsletter e-mailing list, which has a closed subscription, this page is available to anyone in the world with a web browser, (i.e., potentially millions of people). If you're not comfortable letting the world know that you're a gay father, then you may not want to be listed on this page. On the other hand, if you would like to be part of this directory, please e-mail GDC. Include your full name, webpage address (if you have one), preferred e-mail address, and location.
GOAL
The goal of the GAY DADS CANADA Buddy Program is to improve the quality of life of gay fathers by providing practical support and companionship, by assisting gay dads in maintaining autonomy and independence to the greatest degree possible.
RATIONALE
Gay dads all across the country are self-declaring their gayness more than ever before. During the coming out phase gay dads may from time to time need support, be that emotional or practical. The GDC Buddy Program helps to meet those needs. Buddy volunteers can provide ongoing assistance with some of the practical tasks necessary to live as a gay father day to day. Even the best support teams may not be able to be available 24 hours a day. Buddy volunteers can provide the needed support when others cannot.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The GDC Buddy Program provides practical and/or emotional support for gay dads.
Volunteers are matched in one-on-one relationships that may be ongoing or on an as needed basis.
Volunteers provide on-going support. The specific support is negotiated with the dads. The match continues for as long as the support is requested.
